Anthropic led AI model rankings at end of October
OpenAI remained independent and stayed below a $2 trillion valuation.
Anthropic's AI model was judged the best among major rivals at the close of October 2026. OpenAI did not reach a $2 trillion valuation by the end of the year. The company also remained independent and stayed headquartered in its home country.
The assessment was finalized on Sunday, 1 November, after a review of model performance across the sector. The result placed Anthropic at the top of the AI model hierarchy for October.
The figure remained under the $2 trillion mark, falling short of the high target set for the year. The shortfall was noted alongside the company's broader financial performance.
On the same day, OpenAI's corporate status was examined for potential acquisition. The review confirmed that no purchase agreement had been completed before 2027. The company therefore continued operating as an independent entity.
A separate inquiry on Tuesday, 10 November, looked at whether OpenAI, Google DeepMind or Anthropic had relocated their legal domicile from the United States or United Kingdom. The investigation found that none of the three firms had changed their primary jurisdiction before 2027. Their headquarters remained in their original countries.
Analysis
Competitors may need to accelerate development to close the gap, influencing the pace of innovation across the sector.
Remaining independent could preserve strategic flexibility but also limits the financial boost an acquisition might have provided.
The lack of de-domiciling and the absence of an acquisition indicate that the major AI firms are maintaining their existing regulatory and operational frameworks.
