Xavier Becerra elected governor of California
Democrats retained the CA-38 house seat and voters rejected a Billionaire wealth tax.
California voters chose Democrat Xavier Becerra as governor on Tuesday. The same election saw the Democratic Party hold the CA-38 congressional seat. A proposed one-time wealth tax on billionaires was also turned down.
Becerra defeated several challengers, including Steve Hilton, Matt Mahan and Tom Steyer, to claim the office. The race unfolded without incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris entering the contest, as she had announced she would not run for the governorship earlier in November. Voter turnout was high across the state.
In the 38th congressional district, the Democratic nominee prevailed over the Republican challenger. The victory ensured the district remained under Democratic representation in the house. The result mirrored the broader statewide trend favoring the party.
The ballot measure that would have imposed a one-time tax on Billionaire fortunes failed to secure a majority. Opponents argued the levy would hurt the economy, while supporters claimed it would address inequality. The defeat kept California's tax code unchanged in that respect.
Los Angeles elected Karen Bass as mayor, defeating Nithya Raman. Bass's victory added to the string of Democratic wins in the state's November elections.
Analysis
Becerra's election continues Democratic control of the governor's office, preserving the party's ability to advance its legislative agenda on climate, health care, and immigration at the state level. His prior experience as attorney general may shape a more aggressive stance on enforcement and regulatory matters.
Retaining the CA-38 seat sustains the Democratic caucus in the house, contributing to the party's national majority and influencing committee assignments.
The rejection of the Billionaire wealth tax signals voter resistance to sweeping fiscal reforms targeting high-income individuals, limiting the state's options for raising revenue without raising broader taxes. Policymakers may need to seek alternative budget solutions or revisit the proposal in a different form.
The new governor and Los Angeles mayor will need to navigate these constraints as they implement their priorities, and the state's political trajectory will remain a key factor in national party strategies.
